I could not help but feel a little bit like Alexander Supertramp sitting in the airport, waiting to board the plane taking me to possibly the most important adventure of my life. I had no idea what to expect, no idea where I was really going, and knew basically no one. But it was happening. Here is a brief glimpse into where I have been and what I have been doing so far this summer with Kalu Yala.

I arrived in San Miguel my first night in Panama, and would stay there for two nights before hiking out in to the Valley, where I would be spending the majority of my time here. The town of San Miguel is a great place filled with friendly people, and great access to the Valley. I have spent the least amount of time here, but would definitely like to more in the future and learn more about what the San Miguel programs are doing.
What can I really say about the Valley? Words just do not do it justice. Here are a few pictures to show you a few wonders of the Valley:

Although I have only spent a small amount of time here, I have already gained a sense of ownership. It feels like home. I have a lot of ideas that I would like to accomplish this summer with the Outdoor Recreation team. I am excited for stint two in the Valley and ready to see what I will accomplish.

Although not the luscious, open green space I have grown accustomed to, the city is a culture all of it’s own. I have had a blast here for my first weekend! It was great to get to hangout with the Business crew and see what to get to experience on a daily basis.

A couple of us decided to get a room at the Hard Rock Hotel for a night. It was nice to get to experience a few of the luxuries from back home.
From my first few minutes in Panama to the end our first weekend off, I have experienced so much already: a strong bond and sense of community between all Kalu Yalans, a breathtaking landscape that can be matched by few, and a culture I never thought I’d find myself assimilating in to. I cannot wait to experience more of what Panama has to offer me.
